ISSUES CLASS for adults

In Room 7B or watch the live stream (when available):

Jan 26:  The Attention Economy: Why Truth is Becoming Irrelevant presented by Derry member Tim Mosher. We live in an attention economy where a flood of information, much of which is false or misleading, vies for our focus. This class will examine how the attention economy exploits our cognitive biases and makes us vulnerable to fake news — and how information platforms contribute to the spread of fake news, which fuels polarization in our communities. Finally, we will offer practical steps you can take to protect yourself from misinformation.

Feb 2: Standardized Testing: What Does It Measure and How is It Used? presented by Derry member Susan Hubbell-Whyte

Feb 9: Scouting and Troop 200 Experiences presented by Derry member Luke Gawron

Feb 16: The Commonality of Religions presented by Loren Geeting.

Feb 23: Gather the Spirit for Justice presented by Art Williams, an update from one of Derry’s mission partners.

Mar 2-30: Five-week series presented by Dr. Lee C. Barrett, Mary B. and Henry P. Stager Chair in Theology, Professor of Systematic Theology at Lancaster Theological Seminary: What Does the Future Hold? Christians have always trusted that God is at work in human history. But Christians have seldom agreed on what God is doing. That diversity of opinion is as  widespread now as it ever has been. Some see the future as getting worse until it becomes so bad that Jesus must return to set things right. Others see the future as a process of slow progress until humanity, guided by God’s grace, gets its act together and establishes love, peace, and justice on earth. Still others see the future as a roller-coaster, with progress followed by regression in an endless oscillation. Join this class to examine the pros and cons of all these views and take a close look at their contemporary manifestations.

Apr 6 & 13:  During the 250th anniversary year of the the American Revolution, Courtney McKinney-Whitaker talks about its effects on Presbyterians (and Derry Church)

Apr 20:  No class on Easter Sunday

April 27: On Heritage Sunday, a presentation by Derry’s Heritage Committee
