Sacraments
Baptism is the sacrament that unites us with Jesus Christ and makes us members of God’s family, the church.
Through the power of the Holy Spirit, baptism:
- Initiates us into the church
- Assures us that God forgives our sins
- Bestows the promise of God’s grace upon us
- Calls us to a life of Christian service and fulfillment
Through baptism, we become members of God’s family. Each of us is joined as brother or sister with members of the Derry Church congregation and with Christians around the world. The sacrament of Baptism is given only once to a person, but it’s a source of strength throughout life. People of any age are welcome to be baptized, from infants to young people and adults.
The sacrament of baptism is offered several times a year. At least one of the parents is encouraged to be a member of Derry Church and to attend the Baptism classes. For more information, contact Pastor Stephen McKinney-Whitaker.
Communion
COMMUNION is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month. When we gather in person, gluten-free bread and grape juice is served in the pews. All are welcome to partake in this sacrament, and parents are urged to have conversations with their young children about its meaning. A class for second and third graders is held for families each spring to enhance families’ understanding of communion and baptism.
