    The Book of Revelation has always been a source of controversy. No book of the New Testament has received either such ready acceptance or such resolute rejection. In some Christian circles, the Book of Revelation is ”the” book of the New Testament. These persons devote all of their study time to Revelation; they carefully examine every visionary detail to determine what the book reveals about contemporary events and future happenings. In other Christian circles, however, Revelation is the most ignored book of the New Testament. These persons perceive Revelation as an obscure writing that in fact reveals nothing. They believe it to be so incomprehensible that it is not worth the time or the effort to study.
     
    For Christians the Book of Revelation is a source of confusion and misunderstanding. Even the title causes confusion, for this book, which contains a series of revelations and visions, takes its title from the first phrase of the work: "The Revelation" (in the singular). And this is only the beginning of the confusion! The fantastic imagery and the mythological language so characteristic of Revelation are constant causes of misunderstanding and misinterpretation.
     
    In six Sunday morning Zoom sessions we will consider what is surely the most confounding and most controversial book in the New Testament. What is the central message of this widely read, oftentimes misread, and too often unread book?  Is that message one that should cause anxiety in the present and fear about the future, or does the Book of Revelation offer a message of hope and encouragement?  Find out as we study together under the leadership of DR. CHARLES (BUZ) MYERS from the Department of Religious Studies at Gettysburg College.

  • Hershey Food Bank Open To Serve The Community

    The Hershey Food Bank and Community Outreach (HFBCO) reminds families who have encountered challenging economic times that we are here to help. Their purpose is to serve the Derry Township community by providing food and assistance with the temporary needs of families and individuals in financial distress, no matter how large or small your family may be.
     
    Examples of “in need” include:

    • Your children receive free or subsidized school lunches
    • You are on the SNAP program
    • You lost your job or have a low paying job
    • You are a single mom or dad going through difficult times
    • You are on low fixed income or disability or receive medical assistance
    • You are on Section 8 housing program  

    HFBCO is open to serve clients during five different time periods each month but also works with families that have conflicting schedules. Each family is permitted two food pick-ups per month. Families receive fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, meat, juices and other staples to feed the entire family. Diapers, baby food, paper and personal care products are also available.
     
    Other services such as emergency utility and rent assistance are available for established fHFBCO clients who meet the criteria, one on one budgeting classes, and referrals to other nonprofits and government agencies for needs we are not able to meet.
     
    HFBCO has been serving the Derry Township community for 50 years and is totally staffed by volunteers. In that time, HFBCO has gone through great changes, from serving families out of church basements to building a new facility at 120 E. Derry Road. This wonderful facility was made possible thanks to the great support received from many committed local businesses, residents, churches and civic clubs.

  • Meg Shoeman is Temporary Stated Clerk of Carlisle Presbytery

    Meg Shoeman is a Teaching Elder who was ordained by Carlisle Presbytery in 2018. Following her ordination, she served in a chaplaincy position in Alabama. Now she’s back in PA, where she worships regularly at Market Square and has been known to some of our churches, as she provides pulpit supply.
      
    Meg is excited about wearing the Stated Clerk hat, temporarily. She loves the church and her references describe her as ‘very smart, inquisitive, eager to learn, with a poetic soul.’ She relates well with all people and brings a strong, pastoral presence. Meg knows and appreciates Presbyterian polity and theology. She’s an excellent communicator, with strong organizational abilities.  

    What does ‘temporarily’ mean? With all that is changing, in the church and in the world, we want to take some time to clarify the presbytery’s needs, along with the nature, scope and term of the office of the Stated Clerk. This will most likely entail some amendments to the by-laws that pertain to the Stated Clerk’s role, which will require the vote of the presbytery, after first and second readings. Over the next 12 months we will do this work, in preparation for the search and election by the presbytery of a ‘permanent’ Stated Clerk. In the meantime, Meg will fulfill the functions of the office, supporting the Clerks of Session, congregations, and entities of the presbytery in the following areas of responsibility:

    • Works with the Coordinating Council in the planning and implementation of meetings of the presbytery, which ordinarily meets quarterly.
    • Creates and Maintains the Reports and Records of the presbytery and its entities.
    • Provides Staff Support to Presbytery Entities and to Clerks of Session of local congregations.
    • Serves as a conduit among the Presbytery of Carlisle, Synod of the Trinity and General Assembly of the the PCUSA.

  • Handcrafted Offering Boxes

    Check out this trio of handcrafted offering boxes made by Derry’s own John and Don Holtzman. They’ll be used at our outdoor worship services, then placed at the Sanctuary entrances when we are able to gather indoors. The oak came from a tree in Don and Claudia’s back yard.

  • Worship Under the Oaks on July 28

    Drop in on the July 28 outdoor worship experience when more than 50 people gathered under the oaks on a warm summer evening. Three more are planned: Aug 4, Aug 11 and Aug 18 at 7 pm in the courtyard. Please RSVP.

  • New Organ Update: July 2020

    Latest news from the team in Connecticut working on our organ restoration: “This is the restored Pedal Bourdon that we are re-using from your former organ. It has been finished in amber shellac so as to fit in with the other Skinner pipes. Many of the stoppers were cracked from improper tuning. They have all been repaired and the stoppers re-fitted. It is a nice large scale and sounds wonderful. It will be a terrific addition to the organ. We have also completely rebuilt the three chests.”

  • Welcome Grant!

    Grant Wareham, our new Director of Music and Organist, stepped into his new role on Youth Sunday, July 26, playing the final hymn. He was back at the piano bench on Monday to play for "Here in This Place." Watch for a new music video on Friday and for him to play on Sunday morning, Aug 2 for live streaming worship.

  • Wear Orange on July 25

    Orange Day on Saturday, July 25 is an opportunity to show support for those who are working to end the exploitation of women and children. Victims of labor and sex trafficking are often subject to debt bondage. Many are trapped in a cycle of debt because of having to pay for all living expenses in addition to initial transportation expenses. Fines for not meeting quotas and/or “bad” behavior can used to increase debt.

  • Tuesday Worship from Derry Church

    Click below to join Rev Nancy Reinert for worship and communion focused on God's abundant gifts in our lives. The lesson comes from John 21. Musicians include pianist Dan Stokes and singers Sara Woodbury, Jim and Cindy Royer, and Maisie Seiverling. From July 28 to August 18, Tuesday services will be in-person. Pre-recorded services will return when we're not meeting in person mid-week.

    Notes from the treasurer:

    • Contributions are a little under 2019, but continue to remain stable. We are trailing forecasted contributions, but I think we are doing well considering the impact of COVID-19.
    • Committees in general are spending less than in 2019. We expect this to continue while church activities are occurring remotely and as we have asked committees to be mindful of spending. Personnel spending will start to increase with the associate pastor and music director positions filled.
    • Cash flow is good with an increase in Net Assets of almost $112k so far this year. This is similar to last year at this point. The expectation is that this will start to decrease as we are now fully staffed.
