  • Discover Derry Church This Summer

    The three-week summer series of New Member Discovery Classes will be held 8-10 am Sundays, July 30 August 6 and 13 in Room 2 on the lower level. Classes will be repeated Wednesdays from 6-8 pm on August 2 and 9. Meet the church staff and leaders and find out more about the mission and ministry of Derry Church and how you can get involved. Those who decide to join will be received as members at the 10:30 am service on Sunday, August 13. Register by Wednesday, July 26 (533-9667).

    Presbyterians Today is our denomination’s award-winning monthly magazine. Each issue includes inspiring mission stories, stimulating theological articles and news about the people and churches across the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Copies of the magazine can be found in the atrium library and at the Information Center. Join Derry’s group subscription rate,   now $2 less than last year: only $9.95 for six issues when we maintain ten or more subscribers. That’s a savings of nearly half off the $17.95 cost for a one-year individual subscription, To add or renew a subscription, make checks payable to Derry Presbyterian Church for $9.95, notated “Presbyterians Today.” Return checks by July 1 by mail to the church or place in the manila envelope in Rev. Marie Buffaloe’s mailbox. Please DO NOT place payment in the offering plate.

    Thanks to all who participated and led activities during Mission Week PLUS! See more pictures of our amazing mission volunteers on Derry’s Facebook page and, in the future, you will hear stories from many of them. The Mission & Peace committee would like to express gratitude for all the helping hands and hearts given to our mission to do God’s work and show God’s love. Remember that most missions continue through the summer and some all year long. If you have found a mission opportunity that you would like to continue, please do!   • Summer Social for New Members: July 23

    3-5 pm Sunday, July 23 in Fellowship Hall for all who have joined Derry Church in the past 12 months and those who have signed up to attend the summer series of new member classes. Enjoy make-your-own ice cream sundaes, reconnect and get to know others and find out ways you can be involved. RSVP to Rev. Marie Buffaloe by Sunday, July 16.

    A huge, heartfelt thank-you to the good folks at Derry for the calls, the many cards and the love and appreciation shown to me following my recent retirement as receptionist at Derry. The gift of the beautiful angel and the lavish reception in my honor following the service were so much appreciated. I feel very blessed to be part of the Derry Church family!   • Introducing Derry's New Chancel Flower Coordinator

    Sandy Pushnik is the person to contact when you want to place flowers on the chancel on Sunday mornings. She can be reached by email or by calling 838-6902. To honor or memorialize a loved one by donating one or more flower arrangements, contact Sandy to determine available dates, then make a contribution of $60 for one arrangement or $120 for two arrangements. All flower contributions are tax-deductible.

  • 14th Annual Independence Day Celebration: July 3

    7:30 pm Monday, July 3 on the front lawn of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The public is invited to “An American Salute,” a performance by the Hershey Symphony Orchestra. This group of accomplished musicians is one of the nation’s largest volunteer orchestras with more than 80 members. Admission and parking are free. Food and beverages will be available for purchase starting at 6 pm. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets. The first half of the concert will feature selections from the Broadway smash “Hamilton,” a few John Williams pieces including ‘Star Wars’ and a medley of Sinatra hits. For the second half of the concert, the orchestra will present “A Salute to America,” accompanied by vocalists. These selections will celebrate America and provide a special tribute to the military.

  • Independence Day Concert

    3 pm Tuesday, July 4 at Pine Street Presbyterian Church, Harrisburg. The 150-member Utah Valley Children’s Choir, a private music academy whose mission is to “Sing for the Lord,” uses sacred religious music to teach spiritual values and improve singing skills. Founded by Beverly Thomas and Mary Visker, the Choir has been touching lives through music and service for 30 years.

  • Calling All Night Owls: Bethesda Mobile Mission Needs YOU!

    9 pm Friday, July 7 at Bethesda Mission: finish up by 12 am. Youth age 12 and older are encouraged to participate with their parents. You'll travel in Bethesda Mobile Mission’s van and deliver meals and supplies (and Derry's handmade fleece blankets) to homeless individuals in downtown Harrisburg. Six volunteers are needed: contact Craig Smith (566 4757). Next opportunity: Friday, September 1.

  • Thank you, Derry!

    Last week eight Derry members partnered with Bridges to Community and 12 local masons to help build two houses in Comejen 4, Nicaragua. These houses were built in memory of Rev. Bob Unverzagt, given by his wife, Joanne, and friends. In addition, daily Bible school activities were received enthusiastically by 35-80 community children and adults. Thank you all for your continued support of this ongoing Mission Week activity. Make your plans now to join Derry's 2018 trip!

    Derry Discovery Days thanks the Derry Seniors for their generous donation to the preschool, which will be used to purchase much-needed classroom supplies. Your thoughtfulness and support is greatly appreciated.

  • 2018 Presbyterian Peacemaking Conference in Israel/Palestine

    April 29-May 12, 2018. Be inspired by stories of Christian peacemakers in the Holy Land and encounter contemporary Palestinians and Israelis, study peacemaking practices within the framework of PCUSA policy, and connect with global and local partners to take meaningful action for a just and lasting peace in the region. Rev. Mark Englund-Krieger, Executive Presbyter, Carlisle Presbytery, will be leading a small group for this trip.

    Apply online at presbyterianmission.org/mosaic by November 15, 2017. Notification and commitment packets will be sent shortly after your application is received and processed. First-time visitors encouraged to apply. Minimum age: 18. Double-occupancy rate $2,600 for all conference expenses, meals and ground transportation; airfare not included.
